Top Five Home Maintenance Tasks for April

If you only do five routine maintenance tasks for your home during the month of April, here are the ones that we suggest that you do. These tasks will help you prepare your home for spring, save energy, and set your home up to looks its best for the rest of the year!

Prepare Central Air-Conditioning

Coming in at number one is prepping your central air-conditioning! This might seem like a tedious job but you wouldn’t want to be stuck in the middle of a heat rush with no AC, would you?

The first step in securing your air conditioner is simply removing the cover of the condenser if you had previously covered it for winter.

The next step is to make sure there is no debris or anything obstructing the outside of the condenser.

Don’t forget to check and change your air filter to ensure that you have quality airflow for summer!

Lastly, you need to inspect the water drain to ensure there isn’t anything blocking it, as well as making sure your water pump functions correctly.

Garage Care

Garage maintenance is essential, especially after the cold and harsh winter months! Luckily for you, we have a couple of suggestions to make the transition into spring smoother.

The first part is sweeping out your garage. During the winter months, your garage is accumulating dirt as well as salt from the melted ice. This is imperative because it can prevent those deposits from being tracked into your home and generate damage.

Part two is inspecting your garage door. This includes lubricating the hardware and confirming there aren’t bolts or brackets coming loose. If anything seems wrong or damaged you should call a professional to repair it immediately.

Spring Lawn Care

April is a great time to start getting your lawn prepared to look its best in the summer. Start off by cleaning branches and any remaining leaves from your lawn.

Next, shear or prune and bushes or trees that may need to be trimmed. You can now start your lawn’s first fertilizer and weed control treatment.

It is also a good idea to start up your lawnmower and make sure the blades are still sharp and the engine is in working order.

Reinstalling Windows screens

With Spring’s higher temperatures more and more bugs will begin to appear in and around your home. To minimize the chance of bugs getting in make sure you inspect your window screens for tears or holes.

If you find a hole, most hardware stores, and of course Amazon, sell window screen patch kits.

If you find a major tear in the screen you will likely need to contact a window screen repair company in order to have it fixed.

While inspecting your screens, you can also clean the window frames and re-caulk any areas that need it.

Preparing automatic sprinklers for use

Last but certainly not least, don’t forget to prep your automatic sprinklers for use! It is a good idea to prepare them earlier rather than later when your lawn will need immediate watering.

To prepare your sprinklers for use, first, check your lawn for frozen ground. Use a shovel and stick it into the lawn, about one foot down, and see if you feel any frozen hard soil. If you do wait another week to turn your sprinklers on.

Next, turn on your control panel and check the watering times.

Then, Inspect each sprinkler head for damage or clogs in the nozzles.
