Moving in itself is stressful, time-consuming and emotional, but we’ve all been there and have learned to overcome the struggle. Like starting a new job or entering a new relationship, it’s full of changes, but also full of opportunity. For families, especially those with kids, it can be a whirlwind. But with the right planning and mindset, you can take this scary and challenging move to something exciting and fresh for everyone involved.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to make this transition smoother, not only for your kids but you as well.

Be Transparent

Honesty is key. You’ll want to sit the kids down and really dive into the why and when as soon as the move is finalized. So why are you moving? For a job? To be closer to family? Using simple and direct language establishes a mutual understanding for you and them. Address their concerns as well and keep them updated on plans early to set them up to speed every step of the way.

Get the Kids Involved

Letting your kids have involvement in this process gives them a sense of control and more of an inclination to take interest in the move. You can keep this step as simple or complex as you want, but here is what that could look like:

  • Help them create their own packing list. This one is easy and saves you some physical labour because it can actually be played as a scavenger hunt type of game. Keep it light and fun for them, it’ll be less work for you!

  • Consider some of their views and opinions for a house you have in mind. Obviously keep it within reason (no amusement parks and castles) but something small to you can seem huge to them.

  • Help them decorate! One of the easiest ways to get your kid excited about moving is making their new room feel like theirs. You do not have to break the bank with this one, but something like new bedding or a fun piece of decor can spark a sense of optimism for their fresh start.

Visit the New Area as a Family

Before settling down in your new humble abode, take the time to plan a trip with the whole family to the new area you’re moving to. Whether it’s across the country or a neighborhood over, explore the area and find kid-friendly activities like parks, playgrounds and shops they might like. Getting them familiar with the area will help immensely with their process of feeling at home and give you a sense of community.

Give a Meaningful Goodbye

Your kids will want to say goodbye to the people and places they have been surrounded by, and you will too. Host a goodbye party or visit their favorite park one last time in order to secure closure. This will help everyone process the change in order to move forward.

“Moving Day Survival Kit”

Give your kids the chance to feel secure with this one. A moving day survival kit can mean the difference between something scary and feeling true comfort. Pack the essentials like pajamas, toiletries, chargers, change of clothes and their favorite blanket or stuffed animal. This can be a real ‘you got this,’ moment for you and your kids. Having all the essentials will create less chaos in a new space.

Give Everyone Grace

Moving is a big deal for the whole family. It can bring frustration, stress and maybe even some tears, but that’s okay. Be patient with your kids and yourself, and remember transitions like this take time. Through all of this you will find the endless opportunities you’ve created for your family and that’s pretty incredible.

A summer move might come with a busy schedule and many emotions throughout the house, but it also is a chance to reset, reconnect and start a whole new chapter in your life. While taking this list into consideration, giving yourself the time to prepare and get into the right mindset, you can create a time to get closer with your family and start a new journey with them.
