With summer approaching quickly, and those perfect 70 degree days starting to heat up, it’s safe to say we’re all ready to slow down and enjoy some sun. Idaho, being true to its ‘Gem State’ nickname, is filled with gorgeous destinations. But if you are looking for the ultimate relaxation spot, these hot springs are a must-visit this year. For just under a 2-3 hour drive outside the city, you’ll find some of the most breathtaking views and pure tranquility. We’ve put together a list of some of our favorite spots, but these are just some of the many hot springs you can find throughout Idaho.

1. PINE FLAT HOT SPRINGS

Distance: 70 miles northeast of Boise, 1 hour 40 minutes from Boise

  • Best Time to Visit: Summer or Fall

  • Description: Looking for more of an adventure? This hot spring is for you. With a half mile hike down from the campgrounds you can include a scenic route to this destination, awaiting a tranquil experience. Pine Flat Hot Springs offers a number of pools nestled into the side of a cliff-like terrain with epic views of the Payette River.

2. BONNEVILLE HOT SPRINGS

Distance: 120 miles northeast of Boise. 2 hours and 20 minutes from Boise. 

  • Best time to visit: Late Fall or Spring

  • Description: This hot spring might feel like a secret hideaway in the woods. Featuring hot waterfalls pouring down from the hillside into the sandy-bottomed pools below, with a rustic shack offering a spring-fed soaking tub for more privacy. This destination is perfect for those that may need to disconnect and soak in to the natural beauty of Idaho.

3. TRAIL CREEK HOT SPRINGS

Distance: Approximately 110 miles north of Boise, 2 hours 25 minutes from Boise

  • Best time to visit: Spring and Summer

  • Description: Trail Creek Hot Springs offers a peaceful soak just steps from a mountain creek. Two rock-walled pools have a clever spigot system that lets you mix in cold river water to adjust the temperature. Surrounded by forest and often lightly trafficked, this gem feels like a hidden sanctuary. Pro tip: go early in the day to beat the crowds and soak in total serenity.

4. THE SPRINGS- IDAHO CITY

Distance: 45 miles northeast of Boise (about 1 hour)

  • Description: If you’re living on the more bougie side of life, this upscale hot spring may just be the perfect fit for you. With a beautifully maintained communal pool, private tubs and a full spa services for the total pampering package. The clean facilities and tranquil setting make it a popular destination year round. These pools fill fast, so it is highly recommended to book a reservation before making your trip.

5. KIRKHAM HOT SPRINGS

Distance: About 80 miles northeast of Boise. 1 hour 48 minutes from Boise

  • Best Time to Visit: Winter or Spring

  • Description: Just along the South Fork Payette River, you can find a more rugged hot spring experience at this iconic Idaho destination. Waterfalls descend down from the layered rocks creating soaking pool areas just steps away from the parking lot via a short staircase. If you happen to miss this one during the spring, it is also a perfect winter destination, contrasting to the snowy terrain and steamy water in the cold air- pure Idaho magic!

6. GOLD FORK HOT SPRINGS

Distance: 100 miles north of Boise, near Donnelley. 2 hours 25 minutes from Boise

  • Description: A private facility with a more spa-like vibe offers a more structured experience with six man-made pools of varying temperatures. This hot spring makes a great family trip including a sandy bottom pool suitable for children. Amenities include a changing room and a snack bar.
